37-Year-Old Spokane Boxer Making Comeback After 16 years Away From The Ring

When Billy Drywater steps back into the ring Thursday night at Legends Casino in Toppenish it will be nearly two decades since he was a part of a professional boxing match. “I’m a long way from stopping in this game, I’m 37 years old. I plan to keep staying in the game. I love this sport and I’ve been away from the ring for a while but I’ve stayed in shape and I’m ready for this fight,” said Drywater

Drywater is originally from Oklahoma but moved to Nespelem, Washington when he was only 3 years old. Drywater is Native American and knows that he’s an inspiration to many young native children.

“I am certainly aware of that. I want to represent my heritage and inspire others that they too can become professionals at this sport. I love fighting for my people and it’s something I’m very proud of,” said Drywater.

Drywater says he stepped away from the ring because life got in the way of a professional career. It’s something he doesn’t dwell on. But at 37 years old he feels like there’s still gas in the tank. “Absolutely, I think I’ve got something left. I’m still extremely fast. I have power. When I was young I got off to a great start but life sort of got in the way. I don’t focus on the negative, only the positive in my life,” said Drywater.

Drywater steps into the ring 3-0 as a professional. He will face Joseph Aguilar Thursday night at Legends Casino in Toppenish, WA. Drywater says he’s not taking Aguilar lightly and realizes he will be a tough opponent. “He hits really hard but he’s a bit flat footed. I don’t think he will be able to deal with my speed. I also have a really good jab and people don’t realize how strong my hooks to the body and head are. I’m really looking forward to this fight,” Drywater.

Drywater is training in Spokane at BoxFit with his Head Trainer Jesse Mora. The pair met about a year ago at the gym and really hit it off. “I’ve loved working with Jesse because he’s a great trainer. He really knows his stuff and pushes me to be the best,” said Drywater.

“I love working with Billy,” said Mora. “He’s focused on winning. He comes to the gym every day with a purpose. He’s a heavy hitter and in the 168 pound division I think he’s going to achieve a lot. I’m excited for the future,”.

As for Billy Drywater, he says he’s extremely excited for this fight and he believe he’s going to win.

“I am ready to fight. I’ve trained hard and think it’s going to be exciting for the fans. It’s the first step towards achieving my goals of winning a championship belt,” said Drywater.
